General FAQs

Do I need a model for my course?

For most courses you will only need a model in the unlikely event that you are the only person booked on. In this case you get the benefit of having a one-to-one session with your tutor.

There are a few exceptions to this:
- Every student on a Body Wrap, Brazilian Waxing or an Eyelash Extension course will need to bring a model.

-You do not need a model on Ear Piercing or Nail Art courses. Even if you're the only person on the course.

Do I need a patch test before attending my course?

You only need a patch test for a few courses, these are listed below:

Eyelash & Eyebrow Treatments
Eyelash Perming
Eyelash Extensions
Professional Brow Artistry

What qualifications do I get after my course?

You will be awarded the Carlton Institute Diploma, as soon as your tutor feels that you have completed the course to our standards  This means that you will be able to get insurance and start earning right away. In the unlikely event of you needing to re sit, you can repeat the course for free.

Do I need to buy a kit for my course?

No, we will provide all the equipment you need for your training.

Can I cancel or transfer my course after booking?

Failure to attend a confirmed course will result in a £40 rebooking fee for each non-attendance. Any course payments including NVQ fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. For more information please see our terms and conditions.

What will I need to take with me to my course?

At the Carlton Institute, we provide everything that you will need to use on the days of your training. The only thing that you will be required to take is your lunch, tea, coffee and other refreshments is available free of charge during your course period. You might also be required to bring a model along with you dependant on the course, but this will be fully explained to you either before your booking or immediately after via email for those who book online.

What are the course times?

All our one day courses start promptly at either 09.00am or 09:30am and finish at approximately 4.30pm with a short break for lunch. However this does vary depending on what course you are booking so we would suggest if you are in doubt to give our Bookings Team a call and they will be able to assist you. Late arrival is extremely disruptive to other students and will result in you missing out on important theory work already covered. If you arrive late (in excess of 30 minutes) you will be unable to participate in the training which will result in a £40 rebooking fee for a rescheduled date.  Please therefore ensure you allow sufficient time for travelling and arrive at your chosen location 15 minutes before the commencement of the course.

How can I book and pay for my course?

All bookings can be made over the phone using a credit or debit card, we would simply need to take some of your details (if you are a new customer) and book you on to your chosen course. Alternatively, all of our courses, including NVQ qualifications, are available to book on-line via our website. For courses over the value of £500 we will need to take a non refundable deposit of £199 and any course booked under the value of £500 is a £49 deposit with the balance due 14 days before the commencement of the course.

Why are the Carlton Institute's courses so much shorter than at colleges of further education?

We provide short intensive training in small groups (maximum of twelve students per tutor).  The first part of the course covers essential theory for about an hour and a half, but most of the training is practical, hands on training where students are able to perform the treatments on each other. For those students wishing to go on to achieve an NVQ Qualification, a flexible home study route is available for the majority of our courses.

NVQs FAQs

Why should I choose to complete an NVQ Qualification

An NVQ is a widely recognised standard of achievement.  If you are looking for a job working in a top quality salon or spa, they will generally require you to have a Level 2 and Level 3 beauty therapy NVQ qualification.  Equally, if you want to work on a cruise ship or travel and work abroad, it is helpful to have a qualification which people recognise – that’s where a beauty therapy NVQ comes in. In addition, some local authorities now require you to have NVQs if you want a licence to open a salon or spa.

When you complete your Carlton Institute training in any subject, you will have covered all the theory and practical skill straining which you would need for an NVQ.  You are more than half way there.  Doesn’t it make sense to complete the NVQ while you are doing your training and it is all fresh in your mind?

How can I achieve my qualifications via the flexibile home study route?

Everyone studies at their own pace. If you are in a hurry, you can complete your NVQ in as little as 6 – 8 weeks (you will need to work very hard).  Otherwise you can spread out over a few months or even up to 2 years if you wish, while being able to get your Carlton Insurance and earn money from clients.  . Once you have registered, we will send out your NVQ portfolio pack for you to make a start after you have fully completed your training.

You can either book straight onto our NVQ courses or alternatively if you decide after completing one of our Carlton Institute Diploma courses that you wish to gain an NVQ then please do not panic as you are more than welcome to do this. You must register for the qualification within 12 weeks of completing your diploma training course.   After your training, or payment, you will be sent your portfolio pack through the post for completion.  You will also be required to carry out treatments from home (generally up to 12 treatments for each unit being studied).  All treatments and theory work completed will need to be kept in a folder as this is required as evidence when you attend for your assessment.

Once you have completed all of the assignments/studying and your portfolio of treatments, you will be required to send this one back to us for marking. Once your portfolio has been marked then you will be invited back to one of The Carlton Institute’s assessment centres for an assessment which will include both written and practical exams.

Why are the Carlton Institute's courses so much shorter than at colleges of further education?

We are the pioneers in provision of fast-track intensive training.  With us, you will train in small groups (maximum of twelve students per tutor).  The first part of any course covers essential theory about the subject.  We do send you the course material in advance and expet you to have done some reading in advance of the course.  This allows us to ensure that most of the training is practical, hands on training where students are able to perform the treatments on each other.

Using our trusted techniques, developed using decades of experience, we are able to ensure that you  will absorb the techniques and the theory required for each subject.  You will observe, practice and be assessed on the techniques for each subject.  Following this, you will need to practice these techniques in your home study, and prepare case studies of what you have done.  We will always be there to provide you with continuing support by email or phone while you prepare your portfolio.

Can I get funding for my NVQ?

There are various ways to get funding for your course depending on your personal circumstances.

For more information take a look at our NVQ Funding Options page.

What help can I get help with my portfolio?

We provide free phone support throughout your NVQ, as well as 1:1 tuition available with tutors. For more information take a look at our Portfolio Guide.

How long do I have to complete my NVQ?

We recommend you take no longer than 2 years to complete your NVQ. While the training is fresh in your head you should jump straight in and develop your skills and gain your qualification. On the other hand, we suggest you take at least 12 weeks over your home study and portfolio to ensure it is thorough.
